Tips to maintain your garbage disposal
1) Run Disposal Regularly
Turn on water and run your disposal every few days to move the parts around, prevent rust and corrosion, even if you don’t have any leftover food to grind up.
2) Use Cold Water
Make sure to run cold water when using your garbage disposal. It hardens food, so it can be easily ground up and pushed out the drain pipe.
3) Run Disposal Longer
You can add a little dish soap, and keep the water running for a minute after you have finished grinding up the waste. It will help to clean out your disposal.
4) Cut Waste into Small Pieces and Grind Citrus Fruit
Cut waste into smaller chunks and put in a few pieces at a time. Otherwise, you can clog, jam or break it. From time to time, toss the peel from an orange, lemon, lime in your disposal to eliminate any unpleasant odors.
5) Do not put these items in your disposal to prevent clogs and not to dull the blades of a garbage disposal
Grease, oil, potato peels, glass, plastic, metal, paper, big bones, seeds, or pits, egg shells, expandable foods, such as pasta and rice.
